The primary goal of any Reef Encounter speciality scuba dive course is to teach you important skills in a fun environment.

All rescue courses are taught on board Reef Encounter with highly experienced Dive Professional Trainers, ensuring that you get the most out of your training and your diving holiday.

Stress is a major contributor to rescue situations and diving accidents. Through this course you will learn accident prevention, as well as how to handle problem situations if they occur.

The program is about avoiding, recognizing and solving problems on the surface and under water.

Rescue Course Content

A Stress and Rescue Course onboard Reef Encounter takes 4 days, 3 nights to complete.

A maximum of three dives a day are training dives towards your Rescue Diver Certification, with plenty of time for additional fun dives, relaxing and enjoying your holiday.

Included in your Great Barrier Reef liveaboard, Reef Encounter Stress and Rescue course package is a First Aid and CPR course, which takes one day to complete on land in Cairns and can be booked through our office. (As a prerequisite for certification you need to have a valid CPR & First Aid certificate).

The course entails both academic theory sessions and in-water training onboard Cairns liveaboard, Reef Encounter. You will be required to read an SSI Stress and Rescue manual and sit a multiple choice exam.

Prior Requirements

  • Minimum age 12 years. Children under 15 years must be accompanied by a parent or adult
  • Students must be able to swim at a basic level
  • After booking your Learn To Scuba Dive Course you will receive an email with information asking you to complete an online training lesson. Although it is not mandatory, it is recommended.
  • Compulsory dive medical in accordance with Australian Standard AS4005-1. It is law in Queensland that all scuba diving students get a medical check-up. Upon booking your course, you will be provided with information on how to get your medical check. Fee is payable directly to doctor.

Please read the terms and conditions of each Great Barrier Reef tour. Some medical conditions and/or medications may prevent from participation in scuba diving activities. We recommend that you do not fly in an aeroplane for at least 24 hours after participating in scuba activities.

How to get there

Your Great Barrier Reef liveaboard cruise begins on board our transfer boat, ‘Reef Experience’, from Cairns Marlin Marina ‘A Finger’. Boarding commences at 7:25 am.

On the last day of your stay you will arrive back into Cairns at approximately 4:30 pm.
